Code: Select all
Question - Would you like to take on "Metroid", why do not obtain the rights for this film in 2007 or 2008?

Dr Boll - It is interesting. I will think about it.

Code: Select all
Question - Which games do you think you will take on around 2007-2010?

Dr Boll - Far Cry, Hunter, Fear Effect, Hitman, Dungeon Siege

Code: Select all
Question - "Saw" incorporated many fast forward motion scenes to convey information, most likely to contrast the music videos used in its score. Would you use these methods to promote your film?

Dr Boll - We made a video for ALONE IN THE DARK with NIGHTWISH that incorporates such motion.

Code: Select all
Question - The scenes in that film are almost become subliminal montages and the director is not afraid to express emotion and fear in the dark. This method not only forces the viewer to engage on other senses, but it causes them to use their imagination then the film providing an image for them. In some aspects the film can appear more horrific then it already is
with the use of these quick shots; looking at the gore for a split second not allowing the viewer to digest the prosthetics involved. Will you take on these methods to make the scenes instense?

Dr Boll - To stay too long on the gore is a mistake. I agree. So to see stuff quickly or maybe not even clear in the dark is an old strategy.

Code: Select all
Question - Is "Alone in the Dark" true to the game, what is different?

Dr Boll - We used only the setup of A NEW NIGHTMARE, the characters and the mood - not the story line. We have an artifact as the key for hell

Code: Select all
Question - Which actors are you thinking of using for "Far Cry"?

Dr Boll - Either "The ROCK", "VIN DIESEL" or "BRUCE WILLIS".

Code: Select all
Question - The game boasts it has a great A.I. that can make realistic decisions based on observations of the current state of the world. These highly-trained mercenaries are designed to utilize environmental features, attack in groups, divide & conquer, respond to player actions, and call in reinforcements from air, land or sea. How will you express this?

Dr Boll - In Far Cry we will follow the game story first time really close.

Code: Select all
Question - Quentin Tarantino and Jackie Chan are great action movie directors. Their secret lies in the ability to use the enviroment, not only as a prop but as a weapon or an obstacle to distract the characters. Will you revise their recent films like "Kill Bill" and "New Police Story" to learn how to master the camera work and dexterity of the fight scenes?

Dr Boll - If you check out ALONE you will see that we worked with a great fight choreographer and stunt team. They worked on RUMBLE IN THE BRONX for example.

Code: Select all
Question - How will you incorporate the enviroment creatively to bring your movies to life? What will you do different to upgrade your past work?

Dr Boll - ALONE has strong characters, good actors in a very good story. The technical elements are all handled by key people with great credits. The enviroment like the stuff in the museum, the totempols etc. will be used effectly

Code: Select all
Question - In "Hunter : The Reckoning" will you match the third person shots that we see in the game, exactly?

Dr Boll - We have an extremly well draftet script with skinriders, ghouls, carpenters etc. - a little complicated but they took care together with WHITE WOLF to bring all the game elements on paper

Code: Select all
Question - In the game, evil is everywhere, they are our babysitters, policemen, bartenders and even our friends. Dr Boll, how will you display this concept without the film becoming a cheesy rip off of say "The Bodysnatchers"? How will you demonstrate that these characters are evil?

Dr Boll - This is the point - nobody is not suspicious - you are nowhere safe. It is a good question because it was a generall decision: has a skinrider his own body? Our answer is: YES - in the moment he is in between two people, where he changes body. The writers made some very good decisions.

Code: Select all
Question - In your movie how do people become Hunters? Will you avoid giving them a shitty name like Blade Trinity's Nightstalkers?

Dr Boll - HUNTERS are HUNTERS - it is like a underground army - not an elute team - more the last survivers with special abilities. Our lead will refuse to be a HUNTER. He wants his normal life back - but there is no way back

Code: Select all
Question - How will you start the movie "Hunter : The Reckoning"? A great introduction would be a multi-layed action shot introducing us to the main characters, Deuce, Father Cortez, Kassandra and Samantha?

Dr Boll - No. We will learn this characters later.

Code: Select all
Question - Will you combine their introductions to save screentime?

Dr Boll - Yes, there coming in as a group. Our lead character is RIGGS

Code: Select all
Question - How will you differntiate the characters? Will you give each one a special ability, weapon or combo to impress the reviewers?

Dr Boll - EXACTLY just that.

Code: Select all
Question - There should be a lengthy use of ALL weapons seen in the game from TWENTY melee weapons, ranged and spell weapons, axes, shotguns, swords and flamethrowers, which weapons will appear in the film and for how long will we see them featured, no 10 minute shit man?

Dr Boll - We will use all weapons and we have big, very big action sequences. We have also a massacre in a big slaughterhouse with chainsaws.

Code: Select all
Question - In the game the characters improve in skills and stats, how will you express this in the movie? They will not just gain BIGGER weapons to try and shove this off? I would be most impressed if at the begining you could make the characters miss or get in less fatal shots. Then near the end they can take out some of the characters with fatal head shots in fewer shots with less powerful weapons!?

Dr Boll - Everybody gets special weapons and abilities from the beginning on

Code: Select all
Question - Which actors are you wanting to use for the lead roles?

Dr Boll - I dont know yet. I have a great part that Donald Sutherland wants to play

Code: Select all
Question - Will you use the music band "Coma"? The same band that was used for the game?

Dr Boll - I will talk to WHITE WOLF bout it

Code: Select all
Question - Will you combine CGI with live action shots to pull the effects off?

Dr Boll - Absolutly

Code: Select all
Question - Graphical effects are always reffered back to the Matrix movies these days, how will your movies seperate themselves from this shadow? What unique shot are we most likely going to see that could do this?

Dr Boll - I like the dissolves in PIRATES OF THE CARBEAN, something similar we will use right now for BLOODRAYNE

Code: Select all
Question - You can also take out the enemies piece by piece, shooting off bodyparts etc...could we see this feature often, instead of just taking out loads of enemies using big explosions?

Dr Boll - Cutting or shooting people in pieces is defintly one of my strong sides as a director

Code: Select all
Question - The scenic view can sometimes let a movie down, if there is not much change in the enviroment. Could you blend many different enviroments smootly to make the film look fantastic? Research suggests there is a cementary, gothic church, train station and prison. Instead of copying Resident Evil perhaps the zombies could be walking around before the characters realise they are in the cementary?

Dr Boll - Our ghouls are under a graveyard eating the dead people. A lot of skinriders are based in a hospital. And the Hunters in an old church.

Code: Select all
Question - Will you incorporate a few split screen scenes? The screen could split when the characters get separated and then join up again when the scene features ALL of the characters again? In multiplayer 1-4 Hunters are in use at the same time.

Dr Boll - I dont know. I got roasted because I used videogame footage in HOUSE OF THE DEAD

Code: Select all
Question - In the game, you can move in a different direction whilst targetting an enemy, this film should reflect this; how will you pull this off subtly?

Dr Boll - This is intersting in a game and easy in a movie to show, with more subjectives

Code: Select all
Question - Will we see dual gun action? A character emptying both clips at once, into ALL of the monsters featured in the game in just one shot?

Dr Boll - Absolutly. Because I never saw this in other movies.

Code: Select all
Question - Will the zombies in this project resemble those from House of the Dead? How will you upgrade your work, to make them cooler and more horrific?

Dr Boll - Different special effect make up. Our Zombies here will be even more screwed up.

Code: Select all
Question - The film should also include Ghouls and Vampires! How will you portray these characters, how can you make your vampires cooler then those seen in BloodRayne and Blade?

Dr Boll - We use Ghouls as humans they eat dead people. And carpenters - a kind of werewolf/vampires - but no Vampires

Code: Select all
Question - There will be 7 INSANE boss monsters right? Will you match these bosses with those in the game, a true adaptation?

Dr Boll - We cannot bring 7 monsters - it is not in the script WHITE WOLF approved

Code: Select all
Question - Will the concept artwork and downloads featured on the official site of "Hunter: The Reckoning" be reflected in the upcoming posters? We want to see loads of arty posters!

Dr Boll - This will start soon. But you know that I do DUNGEON SIEGE first and HUNTER in 2006.

==========

These answers are from Uwe in reply to TMA's questions

Code: Select all
Question - You said at BloodRayne massacre that your next movie will not be Far Cry but something else and it will be the biggest movie you ever did. Any chance you can you can tell us what it is?

Dr Boll - It is DUNGEON SIEGE based on the Gaspower/Microsoft Game. So here you have it WORLDWIDE first.

Code: Select all
Question - You also said that in the version at the AFM was a rough cut, and that there will be two additional great scenes. Besides that the two new scenes, what else is different about the final version, and are you happy with this cut? If not, would you want to release a director's cut?

Dr Boll - Now I'm really happy. We have two flashbacks in the beginning of the movie now what makes it more creepy. Also we have complete new sounddesign and music, different VOICE OVER and the creatures are earlier coming.

Code: Select all
Question - Any chance you can tell us about these additional scenes, or do you want to keep them a secret till the films release?

Dr Boll - The two new scenes are explaning what happened with Slater/Carnby over 20 years ago.

Code: Select all
Question - I've (T.M.A., a forum member from insomniac, and also a fan) read your shooting script for Alone in the Dark and I really liked what I read. I thought it captured Edward Carnby and his history well, and I really liked the twists and battles. I really look forward into see the final film. But there are many, many things left unexplained. As well, Aline's back story in the game is never explored and the Shadow Island incident are never mentioned. Any chance this is left for the sequel?

Dr Boll - A movie based on a videogame can never show all elements of the game. The main point is to get the basic story, characters and mood of the game on screen - AND: to bring a few things there are not in the game

Well I try to be constructive in what I say but as I am not really familiar with this topic and what you are all getting at I think no comment is the best line of defense for now. I will study the messages and see what I can get from this. But if on the brief read you are trying to make a film of a game - DON'T

Ok, how about this?

I still believe he is a very arogant man that does not deserve the gift of directing that has been bestowed upon him by the almighty Hollywood.

You can say alot of things about Uwe, but there is one good thing about him. If all directors actors etc were as easy going and quick to reply as him, then we'd probably have even more interviews. As for his films, well hopefully Alone in the Dark will be...entertaining :P

Though not necessarily a fan of Dr. Boll's, it is really cool that he is accessible and willing to answer questions from this site. When someone asks about my films or any other project I happen to be working on, I personally try and be as considerate to people as possible. I could really go either way, but personally I gotta respect someone in his position who's willing to take the time to answer our questions.

Ah well, just my two cents.

Question - Will "Dungeon Siege" still be in two parts? YES How long will each movie be? 2 HOURS Should we think of them as two parts or two on their own movies? TWO PARTS

Question - What kind of characters are we likely to see in "Dungeon Siege"?

Goblins, Krug, Spiders, Droogs, Wizzards
in two months i can give you a full overview and synopsis

Question - Any thoughts on which actors you want to get for certain roles?
we are discussing this right now

Question - You once compared this project as a cross between "Brave Heart" and "Lord of the Rings" Do you still plan to do this? Just how will you intend to do this?

We will have a basic REVENGE story. Our leads family get killed in the beginning of the movie.

Question - Will you use more CGI or prosphetics? BOTH MASSIV

What about making it more of a puppet based film like "Labryinth" or "Dark Crystal"?

NO

Question - What is the predicted budget for this film?

Around 70 Mio. $ - but you know we dont waiste money for SOFT COSTS - so it will be like a 110 Mio. $ Studio Budget

Far Cry

================

Question - Will you engage the viewer in a spectacular cop fire scene in the first few minutes of the movie? NO Perhaps start off with Carver's (lead characters) last job as an officer? NO Or would that look too much like "The Punisher"? YES
He is allready in the beginning a boat captain

Question - How long will the introduction of the movie be? How long will it be before Jack Carver finds himself on the coast of Micronesian island?

10 to 15 Minutes

That's cool Rob. Hmm, basic revenge story....kind of typical don't you think? Hate to say this but isn't everyone tired of the old "you killed my brother, father, sister, daughter, doggy, hooker, so now I kill you" subplot. Because I am. Like come on Uwe, Lord of the Rings and the Matrix didn't have one and they were fantastic. Don't you want to be like them

Read what these guys are saying
http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=1 ... ge=1&pp=10

I am truely insulted, it is hard you know to keep coming up with new questions for a movie which has yet to be made you know. People have to realize I have much more things to do then write up interview questions for a website and for a director that is truly hated. It is all too easy for people to critise my attempt at asking some unique questions. It really annoys me.

Ok to be fair to what they have said I do agree that the spelling and grammar of this front news story is pretty bad. I hate to say it, but I really think some of Uwe's typing needs to be edited, its pretty atrocious. Some of the questions also need a little bit of editing to make them more better grammar. You got to admit, if I'd have put up that news story with that many spelling mistakes and grammar errors, you might have told me to change it. If you change all that, then the only thing they can actually criticise is Uwe's answers themselves which is fair enough.

However, I do agree that the people at the forum have over reacted so to speak, as have several others. After all it's not our fault if Uwe likes to say some outrageous things about his movies, and although your questions weren't perfectly worded at least you bothered to try and get some points addressed that were very specific to the game becoming a movie.

I would say change the spelling and grammar though!

Sorry man I got revision to do at this exact moment, so I can't change the entire thing. However I had a quick look, and you just need to make a couple of small changes:

Question - In your movie how do people become Hunters? Will you avoid giving them a shitty name like Blade Trinity's Nightstalkers?

I would get rid of shitty here, yes I know most regs don't mind, but the people over that forum probably get the impression you're 12 from that?

Question - There should be a lengthy use of ALL weapons seen in the game from TWENTY melee weapons, ranged and spell weapons, axes, shotguns, swords and flamethrowers, which weapons will appear in the film and for how long will we see them featured, no 10 minute shit man?

Split this up in to two sentences. and at the end of no 10 minute shit man, maybe add ",right?". This makes the converasational prose actually work a bit better. Maybe change shit to crap or something like that.

Question - In the game the characters improve in skills and stats, how will you express this in the movie? They will not just gain BIGGER weapons to try and shove this off? I would be most impressed if at the beginning you could make the characters miss or get in less fatal shots. Then near the end they can take out some of the characters with fatal headshots in fewer shots with less powerful weapons!?

This only needs an exclamation mark at the end, not a question mark as well.

Finally at the top of the interview just before you start the questions I would make the point that "The answers Uwe has typed are completely unedited, and this is how he types answers in interview questions. We prefer not to censor and edit things at this site so we have decided to leave Uwe's answers exactly how they were typed, including the random capitalisation. Enjoy!"

I would however go through his answers and make sure the spelling is right:

Dr Boll - I like the dissolves in PIRATES OF THE CARBEAN, something similar we will use right now for BLOODRAYNE

You should chage thats to PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, as thats the correct spelling.

Once you've done all that, they can only criticise the answers Uwe gives rather than any interviewing or writing skills.

Hope that all helps.

Well I didn't read all them but I will say who gives a fly fuck about what some RPGnet posters had to say since they don't know shit. Then again I do think some of the questions shouldd be better put together before they're set to Uwe. As for Uwe's handwriting that's unavoidable.

Speaking of which, I'm quite worried know about these "Uwe Boll Films" After reading 10 different Alone in the Dark reviews. Star Wars opening credits?! I'll give a review afew hours.
